Czech banking is undergoing a quiet revolution. While media debates whether AI will replace bankers, something more practical is happening inside banks: AI systems are running in production, reducing fraud losses by tens of percent and processing thousands of AML alerts daily. This isn’t the future — this is the reality of 2026. And there are more opportunities than most banks can manage to utilize.
State of AI in Czech Banking¶
Let’s clarify what “AI in banking” actually means. It’s not one big system controlling everything. It’s dozens of specialized models, each solving a specific problem — from detecting fraudulent transactions through credit risk assessment to personalizing offers in mobile apps.
Major Czech banks — ČSOB, Česká spořitelna, Komerční banka, Moneta — have AI in production at varying levels of maturity. Some operate advanced real-time systems, others are still scaling from pilot projects. But the direction is clear: AI has stopped being an experiment and become an operational necessity.

But what has changed compared to 2024? Three things. First, regulation has become clear — the EU AI Act is in effect and banks finally know what they can and cannot do. Second, models have become cheaper — inference costs have dropped by an order of magnitude, so ROI makes sense even for smaller banks. And third, talent has arrived — the generation of data scientists who studied ML at Czech universities is now in their productive years and knows how to get a model from Jupyter into production.
Fraud Detection: Where AI Saves Billions¶
Fraud detection is the oldest and most mature use case for AI in banking. And for good reason — the return on investment is immediate and measurable. Every caught fraud is a direct saving. Every false alarm that AI filters out is saved analyst time.
How It Works in Practice¶
Modern fraud detection isn’t a single model — it’s an ensemble pipeline. A typical architecture looks like this:
- Rules engine — deterministic rules for known fraud patterns (transaction over limit, unknown country, unusual merchant). Fast, predictable, but rigid.
- Anomaly detection model — unsupervised ML (isolation forest, autoencoder) detects deviations from the client’s normal behavior. Catches new fraud types that rules don’t recognize.
- Supervised classifier — gradient boosted trees (XGBoost, LightGBM) trained on historical fraud data. High accuracy on known patterns.
- Graph neural network — analyzes relationships between accounts, identifies fraud networks. Example: 10 accounts created from the same IP address sending money to the same target account.
- LLM layer — new in 2026: large language models analyze text data (transaction notes, client communication) and generate explanations for analysts.

The key detail is latency. Banking transactions must be processed in milliseconds. You can’t simply call GPT-4 API for every card payment. ML models for fraud detection run on-premise or in private cloud, optimized for inference speed. The LLM layer engages only in the second step — during analyst review of flagged transactions.
Real Numbers from the Czech Market¶
Czech banks process millions of card transactions daily. The rules engine flags roughly 0.5–1% as suspicious. The problem? Over 90% are false positives — legitimate transactions that just look suspicious (a purchase abroad, a higher-than-usual amount).
ML models reduce the false positive rate by 30–50%. In practice, this means the fraud analyst team doesn’t have to manually review hundreds of unnecessary alerts daily and can focus on real fraud. That’s a real saving of dozens of person-hours per week — and a higher catch rate for actual fraud.
Credit Scoring: More Accurate Assessment, Fewer Defaults¶
Credit risk is the core business of every bank. Traditional credit scoring relies on logistic regression with a few dozen variables: income, employment, repayment history, age, number of existing loans. It works. But in 2026, it’s no longer enough.
What ML Brings to Credit Scoring¶
Machine learning models (gradient boosted trees, neural networks) work with hundreds to thousands of features. Beyond classic financial data, they include:
- Transaction patterns — how the client spends, how regularly income arrives, what the expense-to-income ratio is over time
- Behavioral data — how they use mobile banking, how often they check their balance, whether they set budget limits
- Alternative data — utility and telecom payments, e-commerce transactions (in compliance with GDPR and with client consent)
- Macroeconomic features — interest rates, regional unemployment, real estate price trends
The result? The Gini coefficient (the standard measure of a scoring model’s discriminatory power) for ML models typically runs 5–15 percentage points higher than logistic regression. In practice, this means more accurate identification of risky clients and simultaneously approving loans for clients a traditional model would reject — but who actually repay.
The Explainability Problem¶
This is where we hit a fundamental regulatory hurdle. The EU AI Act classifies credit scoring as a high-risk AI system. This means an explainability obligation — the bank must be able to explain to the client why their loan was rejected. “The neural network said no” is not an acceptable answer.
That’s why a hybrid approach is used in practice: the ML model generates a score, but the final decision passes through an interpretable layer. Techniques like SHAP values (SHapley Additive exPlanations) decompose the model’s prediction into individual feature contributions. The client gets an explanation like: “The main factors for rejection were: low income-to-requested-payment ratio (45%), short history with the bank (12 months), existing obligations at other institutions.”
Czech banks we work with invest in model governance platforms — systems that automatically track model drift, bias, and generate audit reports required by the regulator. It’s not glamorous, but without it you won’t get a model into production.
AML/KYC: From Manual Drudgery to Intelligent Automation¶
Anti-Money Laundering and Know Your Customer processes are a regulatory necessity and simultaneously one of the largest cost blocks in banking operations. Czech banks spend hundreds of millions of CZK annually on compliance teams that manually review suspicious transactions and onboard new clients.
AI doesn’t just bring savings here — it brings qualitatively better results.
Automated AML Screening¶
Traditional AML systems work on rules: “transaction over EUR 15,000”, “transfer to a high-risk country”, “unusual transaction pattern.” The problem is the same as with fraud detection — an enormous number of false positives. Banks report that 95–98% of AML alerts turn out to be legitimate after manual review. That’s an astronomical volume of unnecessary work.
ML models trained on historical investigations can reduce the false positive rate by 40–60%. How? By analyzing context that rules don’t see: the client’s overall transaction history, their profile, connections to other entities, comparison with a peer group of similar clients. The model doesn’t say “this transaction is suspicious” — it says “this transaction is suspicious in the context of this client and their usual behavior.”
Intelligent KYC Onboarding¶
Opening a bank account in the Czech Republic traditionally meant visiting a branch, presenting documents, and waiting. In 2026, the standard is digital onboarding — and AI plays a key role at every step:
- Document verification — OCR + computer vision extracts data from ID cards/passports, verifies document authenticity (security features, image manipulation)
- Biometric verification — liveness detection + face matching compares a selfie with the photo on the document. Modern models detect deepfakes and presentation attacks.
- Sanctions & PEP screening — NLP models search sanctions lists, adverse media, and politically exposed persons databases. Fuzzy matching handles typos and name transliterations.
- Risk assessment — an ML model evaluates the client’s overall risk based on all available data and assigns a risk rating.
Result: onboarding that previously took days is now done in minutes. And compliance quality is higher because the model doesn’t forget to check the sanctions list or misspell a name during manual review.
Conversational AI: From FAQ Bots to Assistants That Solve Problems¶
Chatbots in banking have a bad reputation — and rightly so. The chatbot generation of 2018–2023 was mostly a glorified FAQ: they understood five formulations of the same question and answered anything else with “I don’t understand, please call the hotline.” In 2026, this has fundamentally changed thanks to LLMs.
The New Generation of Banking Assistants¶
Modern conversational AI in a bank isn’t a chatbot — it’s an AI assistant with access to banking systems. It understands natural language (including Czech), has context about the client, and can perform actions:
- “How much did I spend on food last month?” → AI analyzes transactions, categorizes and sums
- “Block my card ending in 4523” → AI identifies the card, blocks it, and confirms
- “I want to dispute a transaction from January 5th” → AI creates the dispute, fills out the form, escalates
- “Would it pay off to refinance my mortgage?” → AI calculates scenarios with current rates
The key architectural pattern is RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) connected to the bank’s internal knowledge base. The LLM doesn’t generate answers from training data — it retrieves relevant information from current documentation, product terms, and the client profile, then formulates an answer. This dramatically reduces hallucinations and ensures up-to-date responses.
Bounded Autonomy in Banking Context¶
Of course — an AI assistant in a bank can’t do everything. This is where the concept of bounded autonomy applies, which we wrote about in our article on Agentic AI. AI can answer questions, display balances, block cards. But it cannot approve loans, change limits above a certain threshold, or make transfers to new accounts without additional authentication. These boundaries are hard-coded — no prompt injection can bypass them.
Tier 1 Support¶
AI handles 60–70% of inquiries without a human agent. Balances, transactions, card blocks, FAQ. Average resolution time: 45 seconds vs. 8 minutes with a human agent.
Financial Advisory¶
AI analyzes spending patterns and suggests optimizations — an unused savings account, cheaper insurance, loan consolidation. Personalized, not generic.
Document Processing¶
AI extracts data from uploaded documents (pay slips, tax returns, statements from other banks), validates, and pre-fills forms.
Multilingual Support¶
LLMs natively handle Czech, English, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese — without needing separate models for each language. Critical for Czech demographics.
Personalization: The Right Offer, the Right Time, the Right Channel¶
Banks sit on an enormous amount of data about their clients — transaction history, product portfolio, interactions with the bank, demographic data. Most of this data, however, sits unused. AI-powered personalization changes this.
Next Best Action Models¶
Next Best Action (NBA) is an approach where an ML model evaluates in real time what action from the bank is most beneficial for each client — both for the client and the bank. It could be a product offer, a risk alert, proactive service, or simply “leave them alone and don’t send anything.”
Practical examples:
- Client regularly travels abroad → travel insurance offer for their card, optimally 3 days before departure (based on flight ticket purchase detection)
- Client has a term deposit expiring next month → proactive reinvestment offer with a better rate before they move the money elsewhere
- Client has rising expenses and declining balance → overdraft warning and consolidation loan offer — not as aggressive sales, but as proactive service
- Client stopped using the mobile app → churn prediction model identifies departure risk, triggers retention campaign
Importantly, personalization is not spam. Models must respect client preferences, communication frequency, and channel mix. A client who gets 5 offers per week won’t be happy — they’ll be annoyed. A good NBA model knows this and optimizes for satisfaction too, not just conversion rate.
Hyper-Personalized Pricing¶
Another area where AI changes the game: dynamic pricing of credit products. Instead of flat rates like “3.9% for everyone,” the model calculates an individual interest rate based on the client’s risk profile, competitive environment, current market conditions, and demand elasticity. A client with excellent creditworthiness automatically gets a better rate — and the bank maximizes margin on risky segments.
Regulatory caution: individual pricing must not be discriminatory. Models must be tested on fairness metrics — disparate impact ratio, equalized odds — to ensure rates don’t systematically disadvantage protected groups (age, gender, ethnicity).
Regulatory Landscape: EU AI Act and What It Means for Banks¶
No article about AI in banking can ignore regulation. And in 2026, the regulatory landscape is clearer — but stricter — than ever.
High-Risk AI Systems in Banks¶
The EU AI Act classifies as high-risk, among others, systems for creditworthiness assessment and credit scoring. For banks, this means:
- Conformity assessment — mandatory conformity assessment before deployment. Documentation of design, training data, performance metrics.
- Data governance — training data must be relevant, representative, and free of systematic bias. Banks need documented data lineage.
- Human oversight — mandatory human oversight of AI decisions. For credit scoring, this means the final rejection must have the option of human review.
- Transparency — the client must be informed that AI is making decisions about them and must receive an understandable explanation.
- Continuous monitoring — mandatory monitoring of model performance in production. Model drift, data drift, bias monitoring — everything must be measured and documented.
The Czech National Bank (CNB) adds its own recommendations beyond the EU AI Act, specific to the banking sector. Banks deploying AI now must architecturally account for the fact that regulatory requirements will only increase.
DORA and Operational Resilience¶
The DORA (Digital Operational Resilience Act) regulation adds another layer of requirements for ICT risk management — including AI systems. Banks must have documented disaster recovery procedures for AI models, test resilience, and report incidents. An AI model that goes down is, from DORA’s perspective, an ICT incident and must be managed as such.
Where the Biggest Opportunities Lie for Czech Banks¶
Not all use cases are equally mature and not all have the same ROI. Here’s our view on where we see the biggest untapped potential in Czech banking.
1. Back-Office Process Automation¶
Surprisingly — the biggest opportunity isn’t in sexy ML models, but in automating boring processes. Processing complaints, payment matching, generating regulatory reports, contract review. These processes currently cost banks hundreds of person-hours monthly and are ideal for the LLM + workflow automation combination.
Example: processing a card transaction dispute. Today it requires manual data extraction from the client’s email, checking the transaction system, filling out the card association form, and sending it. With AI: the LLM extracts data from the client’s message, an agentic workflow checks the transaction in the system, pre-fills the form, and prepares it for submission. The analyst just approves. Processing time: from 25 minutes to 3 minutes.
2. Proactive Risk Management¶
Most banks today manage risk reactively — a problem occurs, the system detects it, the team responds. AI enables a shift to predictive risk management: identifying clients likely to stop repaying in 3–6 months, detecting sector risks in the loan portfolio, early warning systems for market risks.
There’s enormous untapped potential here. Banks have the data. They have the history. What they often lack is the infrastructure for real-time scoring of the entire portfolio and proactive workflows that act on the results.
3. Regulatory Technology (RegTech)¶
Regulatory reporting is every bank’s nightmare. Dozens of reports for the CNB, ECB, EBA — each with a different format, different frequency, different term definitions. AI can automate not only report generation but also interpretation of new regulations. An LLM system that reads a new CNB decree and identifies which internal processes and systems are affected — that’s a real saving of hundreds of compliance team hours per year.
4. SME Lending with Alternative Data¶
Small and medium enterprises are a chronically underserved segment in Czech banking. Traditional credit scoring for SMEs is problematic — short history, volatile cash flow, limited financial data. AI models working with alternative data (supplier payments, e-commerce revenue, social media activity, sector benchmarks) can unlock a segment that’s currently too risky for banks to serve efficiently.
How to Get Started: A Practical Plan for a Bank¶
If you’re in a position to decide on AI strategy at a bank, here’s a realistic plan, not a PowerPoint fantasy:
- Audit data readiness. Before you start with models, find out the state of your data. Do you have data lineage? Are there data quality metrics? Is there a feature store? Without quality data, no model will help.
- Choose one high-impact use case. Not five. One. Ideally one where you have a clear success metric (reduce false positives by X%, shorten processing time by Y%). Fraud detection and AML are the best candidates — data exists, the business case is clear.
- Build an MLOps platform. One model in Jupyter is a POC. Production AI needs CI/CD for models, a model registry, feature store, monitoring, A/B testing infrastructure. Investment in the platform pays off exponentially with each additional model.
- Address governance from the start. Model governance, data governance, AI ethics review board. Not as an afterthought, but as an architectural requirement. EU AI Act compliance isn’t optional — and retrofitting it is 10x more expensive than designing it from the start.
- Hire (or develop) the right team. You need ML engineers (not just data scientists), platform engineers for MLOps, and — critically — domain experts from the banking business who understand the use case. The world’s best model is useless if it doesn’t solve a real problem.
- Scale after validation. Once the first use case demonstrably works in production (not in a POC, in production!), expand to others. The second model on the existing platform will take a fraction of the time and cost of the first.

Banks that invest today in data infrastructure, an MLOps platform, and governance processes will be able to deploy a new AI model in weeks — not months — two years from now. That’s the real competitive advantage. Not a specific model, but the ability to quickly and safely deploy AI into production.
The opportunities are enormous. The data is here. The technology is here. The regulation is clear. The question isn’t “whether” but “how fast and how well.”
