Podman from Red Hat: daemonless, natively rootless, CLI-compatible with Docker.

Differences

  • Daemon: Docker → dockerd, Podman → daemonless
  • Root: Docker → root/docker group, Podman → rootless
  • CLI: drop-in replacement (alias docker=podman)
  • Pods: Podman supports K8s-style pods

Usage

podman run -d -p 8080:80 nginx podman pod create –name webapp -p 8080:80 podman run -d –pod webapp nginx

K8s Integration

podman generate kube webapp > webapp.yaml podman play kube webapp.yaml

When to Use What

  • Docker — larger ecosystem, Docker Desktop
  • Podman — security, RHEL, CI/CD
