We bought our last physical server in 2019. Since then, the strategy has been clear: cloud-first. Not cloud-only — but every new project starts in the cloud.
Why Azure¶
Microsoft Azure as our primary cloud: integration with Microsoft ecosystem, enterprise customers (banks, insurance companies) prefer Azure, EU data centers for GDPR, and hybrid capabilities (Azure Arc, Azure Stack). AWS for ML workloads (SageMaker).
Migration — pragmatic approach¶
Lift & shift to start, then gradual re-platform. We can’t stop business for six months because of refactoring. We gradually replace components with cloud-native alternatives — VM → App Service, SQL Server → Azure SQL.
Cloud isn’t automatically cheaper¶
A VM running 24/7 in the cloud is more expensive than your own server. Cloud saves money with auto-scaling, shutting down dev/test outside working hours, reserved instances and managed services. Our bill in the first months exceeded budget by 40%. Only FinOps practices brought it under control — more on that next time.
Cloud-first doesn’t mean cloud-only¶
Every new project in the cloud, existing ones we migrate gradually. Dogma is the enemy of good decisions.
