March 14, 2023. OpenAI releases GPT-4. After a month of testing GPT-3.5, we expected an evolution. We got a revolution. GPT-4 is a qualitatively different model — and it changes the calculus for enterprise AI adoption.
What’s Different About GPT-4¶
Reasoning. GPT-3.5 often guessed. GPT-4 genuinely thinks. Give it a complex system design problem and you get a structured analysis with trade-offs.
32K token context. That’s roughly 50 pages of text. You can finally give the model an entire specification or a complete code module.
Multimodality. GPT-4 understands images. Upload a wireframe and the model will describe what it sees, suggest improvements, or generate HTML outright.
Our Initial Tests¶
- Requirements analysis: GPT-4 identified edge cases the team had missed — 8/10 relevant
- SQL optimization: Proposed query plans were better than the original in 7 out of 10 cases
- Security review: Found 4 out of 5 intentionally planted vulnerabilities in code
- Architecture: Generated meaningful trade-off analyses for microservices design
Azure OpenAI Service — The Enterprise Path¶
GPT-4 is available through Azure OpenAI Service. Azure compliance, EU data residency, SLA, private endpoints. Exactly what our clients in banking and healthcare need. We can finally deploy AI without a compliance nightmare.
Cost — The Elephant in the Room¶
GPT-4 is expensive. Roughly 30x more expensive than GPT-3.5 per token. We address this with a hybrid approach: GPT-3.5 for simple tasks, GPT-4 for complex reasoning. A router decides based on query classification.
AI Is Accelerating Exponentially¶
Four months elapsed between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. The leap in quality is enormous. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment for AI adoption — that moment is now.
